A bizarre sight greeted him as he rounded the bend. In the middle of a field, the figure of a man spun around and around in a huge circle, an exhaust flame charring the tall weeds. Benson Roberts jumped out of the car as the man took a tumble, somersaulting through the grass.

“Burks!” he shouted, racing toward him. “Burks! What are you doing you lunatic?”

“Benson. . .” the old man groaned, his voice metallic.

He lay in the scorched grass, clad in odd garments. On his head was a steel helmet, welds and steel patches evident; a smoked glass plate hid his face. His shoulders were armored in aluminum, heavily padded beneath. Under the arms, thick leather flaps tapered down to thin, where they were attached to the sides of a heavy tunic. One of the arm flaps had torn open, revealing yards of articulated conduit that steamed in the cold night air. On his feet, he wore a pair of Benson’s own boots, absurdly large on the old man. Along the backs of the shafts were fins that reached almost to the heel. Most bizarre of all, on his back were two nacelles that came together at a round head, slanting away from each other, and held together in the middle by a thick strut. This A-shaped structure attached to an aluminum plate that ran up to meet the armored shoulders.
